Subway footlongs and the economy

I often use Subway footlong prices as a barometer of our current economy and I have been doing this ever since the $5 Footlong specials were terminated back in the day.

The price increase wasn’t something I really noticed until a couple of years ago when I took my son who was 15 or 16 yrs old at the time, to Subway (by the way, his favorite restaurant). It was impromptu, so I didn’t bring or use any coupons with me. Now that I think about it, I remember struggling with the Subway app that day; I just could NOT remember the login. We ordered a couple of footlongs: turkey with spinach, cucumbers, olives, and provolone for him, and a club with everything plus jalapeños for me.

We got to the cashier and heard… “That’ll be $26.40, please.”

I was taken aback for a second. I said, “We just had the two footlongs…no chips or drinks, just a couple of water cups, thanks.”

“Sorry sir, this is for just the two footlongs… $26.40 total.”

Damn, bro. What the what is going on?

Fast forward to today: it’s July 2026. Let’s pull up the estimated price of a Subway footlong over the last 30 years. Since the death of the $5 Footlong promotion1 that ran from 2008 to 2014, the average Subway footlong price2 has been rapidly increasing YoY (Year-over-Year).

Real World Scenario with Actual Receipts6

For additional context because obviously I Google searched all of these stats above, but here is a real world scenario below. The tables and graphs below show my actual Subway purchases pulled from my Subway app. I took the 64 line items across the 27 orders which I was able to find the oldest in February 2020 through July 2025. I went ONCE a couple weeks ago which prompted this blog post and it was damn expensive. I don’t have everything saved in my history (esp. since that time I forgot my login), but you can get a sense of the price increase.

The base price, in five steps

Recurring cheapest price for a plain turkey footlong · +22.1% over 5.4 years

Each value is the price that recurred across multiple receipts in that period. The March 2022 figure rests on a single observation. Vertical axis does not start at zero.

Feb 2020$8.5913
Mar 2021$8.697+1.2%
Mar 2022$8.991+3.5%
Jul 2024$10.295+14.5%

I guess that’s one way to lose weight eating at Subway… by making your wallet lighter. HAR HAR.
